South Porcupine Food Bank Receives Funding Through United Way Centraide North East/Nord-est de l’Ontario’s Community Response Fund

November 3, 2021 – United Way Centraide North East Ontario/Nord-est de l’Ontario (UWCNEO) is pleased to announce the allocation of funds in the amount of $13, 653 to the South Porcupine Food Bank through the Community Response Fund. The Food Bank, which was severely impacted by a fire in June of 2021, lost its entire food supply and most of its equipment to smoke damage.

The funding from UWCNEO’s Community Response Fund will go towards the purchase of five new freezers and a fridge for their new space, as well as help restock the shelves with non-perishable food and hygiene items.

“The South Porcupine Food Bank plays a critical role in the community. With an average of 160 adults and 70 children relying on this service, the funding will ensure vulnerable people continue to have access to food and essential supplies,” says Jennifer Gorman, Regional Manager at UWCNEO.

UWCNEO established the Community Response Fund to provide emergency grants to local charitable organizations working to meet the basic needs of individuals disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19.

Mary Lou Hussak, Executive Director with UWCNEO, adds, “We are truly amazed at the generosity of the South Porcupine community. We are happy to support such an amazing organization providing basic needs to our vulnerable populations.”
