Every Child Deserves a Strong Start

For many children, the first day of school is filled with excitement—a new backpack, sharpened pencils, fresh notebooks, and the anticipation of seeing friends and meeting a new teacher.

But for thousands of children across our region, the first day of school can bring something very different: worry.

When a family is struggling to afford groceries, rent, utilities, or transportation, school supplies often become another impossible expense. A backpack, lunch bag, indoor shoes, winter clothing, or even basic pencils and notebooks can quickly add up, leaving parents forced to make heartbreaking choices between everyday essentials and the tools their children need to learn.

While these items may seem small, their impact is anything but.

Research consistently shows that children who begin the school year without the basic supplies they need often face barriers that extend far beyond the classroom. They may feel embarrassed or isolated from their peers, avoid participating in class, struggle to stay organized, or experience increased anxiety. These challenges can affect confidence, attendance, academic performance, and a child's overall sense of belonging.

No child should feel different because their family is facing financial hardship.

At United Way Centraide North East Ontario, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to walk into school feeling confident, prepared, and ready to learn. That's why we created Ready for School.

The program is about much more than backpacks and school supplies. It is about removing barriers, restoring confidence, and giving children the same opportunity to succeed as their classmates.

One of the most memorable parts of Ready for School is our annual Shopping Day. Rather than simply handing out supplies, children are welcomed into a fun, supportive environment where they can choose their own backpack, select school supplies, pick out new clothing, footwear, and other essentials alongside caring volunteers. For many families, it is the first opportunity in months for their child to choose something that is truly their own.

That simple experience can have a profound impact. It gives children a sense of pride, independence, and excitement about starting the school year.

But we know that success in school depends on more than what's inside a backpack.

That's why United Way also hosts Ready for School Resource Fairs throughout our region. These events bring together local organizations and community partners to connect families with programs and services that support children throughout the school year. From mental health resources and literacy programs to recreation opportunities, food supports, family services, and community organizations, the fairs help families discover the network of support available right in their own community.

The goal is simple: ensure children are equipped not only for their first day of school, but for every day that follows.

When communities invest in children, everyone benefits. Students who feel prepared and supported are more likely to engage in learning, build confidence, develop positive relationships, and reach their full potential. Those early successes create stronger families, healthier communities, and brighter futures for all of us.

Every backpack packed. Every pair of shoes provided. Every connection made at a Resource Fair. These moments represent more than supplies—they represent opportunity.

Because every child deserves the chance to start the school year with confidence, dignity, and hope.
