Food, water, and shelter, the three essential necessities for survival, keep us going. But have we ever stopped to consider the price we pay to secure them? These basic needs are fundamental to life. Imagine not having access to even one of them or being unable to afford all three. What does this do to an individual?
Financial insecurity can take more than just money, it can take away the chance for a better life, access to education, healthy meals, and even the hope to dream. Without these necessities, even the simplest goals can feel impossible to achieve.
The 2025 Financial Anxiety Survey, conducted by Leger among 1,527 Canadians, shows just how many people feel this pressure. Almost half of Canadians worry that the national (48%) and provincial (48%) economy will worsen over the next six months.
The impact of financial stress goes beyond numbers. The survey reveals how deeply money worries affect our emotions:
- 55% of Canadians feel anxious thinking about their finances
- 45% find looking at their bank statements unpleasant
- Over 40% prefer not to think about their finances at all
- 41% experience stress or heart palpitations when discussing money
- 37% often worry about where the money will come from to get by, and feel guilt about their financial situation
